Arranging Furniture In A Self-Storage Unit: Three Helpful Tips

When it comes to using self-storage, boxes are easy to stack and organize. However, storing furniture presents a few unique challenges. These items don't always stack neatly on top of each other, and they can often take up a significant amount of space in your storage unit. If you are unsure about how to arrange your furniture, here are a few helpful tips you can use.

Use Furniture Covers

If you are storing patio furniture, an outdoor grill, or any other item that might come with its own cover, be sure to use the covers to protect your furnishings. In some cases, you can even purchase covers made specifically for your furniture. Plastic or fabric covers designed for use when moving can also be used during long-term storage, and these covers come in a range of sizes and style options. You can purchase plastic moving covers for sofas, recliners, mattresses, and even bookshelves. Quilted covers for sofas and couches are constructed from the same material as moving blankets, making them ideal for protecting delicate furniture from scuffs and scrapes.

Stack Lighter Items On Top

If you have a variety of furniture in different sizes, look to see which items can be stacked on top of each other. For example, bar stools can be placed on top of dining room tables, and small end tables can be placed on top of dressers or chests. Be sure to place a moving blanket over the top of any surface you'll be stacking furniture on, as this will help to prevent damage to all of your furnishings.

Disassemble When Possible

Look to see how larger pieces can be broken down or disassembled. Even some larger couches can be made slightly smaller by removing the legs or armrests. You may be able to remove the legs from tables, or completely disassemble a home office desk. The more items you can break down, the easier it will be to store them in your storage unit. Be sure to take pictures of each item before disassembling, and if possible, snap a picture at each step in the disassembly process. This can make it easier for you to put these items back together again when you need them.

Talk to your self-storage facility about how much you need to store in your unit. The management can help you to find the right size storage space to meet your needs.
