Three Tips For Preparing A Mattress For Storage

If you are planning on placing your belongings in storage, one of the items that you may be planning on storing is a mattress. When you place a mattress in storage, you expect the mattress to come out in the same condition it was when it went in. But, if you do not take the time to properly store it, this may not be the case. Here are a few tips you should follow to properly prepare your mattress for storage.

Clean Your Mattress

Before you store your mattress, take the time to clean it. Fortunately, cleaning a mattress is extremely easy. Simply take a vacuum cleaner and use the upholstery attachment to thoroughly clean the mattress. This helps to remove dirt, dust, and dander that can further embed itself into the mattress when being stored. If there are stains on the mattress, you can spot clean the stains by hand. However, if you do, ensure that the mattress is fully dry before storing it, or mold and mildew may form.

Sprinkle the Mattress With Baking Soda

After your mattress is completely clean, sprinkle both sides of the mattress with a bit of baking soda. The baking soda helps your mattress from smelling musty while it is in storage. Baking soda can also be used after you pull the mattress out of storage for good. Sprinkle it with baking soda once again and lay it in the sun. This will help to remove any odors that it may have absorbed in storage. Allow the baking soda to absorb the smells for ten to fifteen minutes before vacuuming it away. Flip the mattress over and repeat on the opposite side.

Place the Mattress in a Mattress Protector

When you are storing a mattress, it is advised that you use a plastic mattress protector that fully encases your entire mattress. A mattress protector serves many purposes. First, it helps to keep dirt and dust out. Second, it helps to prevent moisture damage. And lastly, it helps to prevent pests from infesting your mattresses or ripping it up.

Preparing your mattress for storage is only the first step in helping to ensure your mattress comes out of storage in the same condition it went in as. After your mattress is ready for storage, lay a tarp on the floor of the storage unit and then place your mattress flat on the tarp. The tarp helps to prevent moisture damage, while storing the mattress flat helps to prevent the coils from becoming misshapen.

If you follow these tips, your mattress should come out of a storage unit exactly the way it went in. Talk with a company, like National Self Storage - Denver, for more information about storing your mattress in a self-storage unit.
